Last weeek of 2010

So, it's the last week of 2010. Time to look back. In all, it was a good year for PC gaming. We had the release of  Mass Effect 2, Fallout New Vegas, Bioshock 2, Star Craft II,  Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Call of Duy Black Ops and World of Warcraft Catacalism, er Cataclysm.

There were some disappointments as well. Alan Wake came out only on XBox (from the reviews, we should probably be glad). Medal of Honor did come out for PC, but was short and formulaic. Alpha Protocol promised a spy thriller but didn't deliver.

So what's coming in 2011? Dragon Age II, Mass Effect 3, a new Lara Croft and Star Wars Old Republic (finally). Here's to 2011!

Happy New Year. May it be good to everyone.

New Fallout New Vegas DLC

So the first Fallout New Vegas DLC has been announced and will be ready on Dec 21st. Called Dead Money, it takes place in the Sierra Madre Hotel. You wake up with an exploding collar around your neck and are forced to work with a crew you've never met to storm the hotel and recover treasure for some unknown person or face the consequences. And if one of your mates dies, you all die.

As you can see, this looks awesome. the bad part about this is that the DLC is an XBox exclusive!!! That's right, folks. Us PC Gamers who have supported the Fallout series since the beginning are left in the dust over this. I know I wasn't going to talk about XBox stuff here, but I just have to. There is no reason to not release this DLC for all us PC gamers. Microsoft makes it incredibly easy to release content simultaneously for both XBox and PC. Their tools just require the dev to write the release once, then compile for XBox, then compile again for PC. Same code, no effort. This is true for full game releases, too. So everything that is released for the XBox can be released for PC with no effort at all.

So, c'mon devs, start supporting us PC gamers for a change.

Good luck and good gaming

Spike TV VGA Awards

So, the spike TV #VGA Awards were last night and, as expected, lots of news. The big announcements were the new Elder Scrolls V Skyrim, coming 11 11 11, catchy, and the trailer for Mass Effect 3 coming "holidays 2011", which involves the invasion of Earth. Other announcements were: Batman Arkham City (it's a whole city now? since when?), and a bunch of Playstation exclusives, which won't get any exposure here. PC Games only, remember.

Game of the year went to Red Dead Redemption, a western themed RPG/Shooter. Best PC Game went to Star Craft II (I blame the NFL for all these Roman numerals).  Best shooter went to Call of Duty: Black Ops, naturally. Mass Effect 2 won for best RPG and best XBox game (although I will always think of it as a PC Game), and Tiger Woods won for Best Individual Sports Game, which is a big deal as it's the only thing he's won all year.

Saturday is the Spike TV video Game awards.

This coming Saturday (Dec 11th) is the Spike TV video Game awards. Although we are looking forward to which games of 2010 will win, especially the Game of the Year, best RPG, and of course, Best PC Game, what we are most interested in are the rumored big announcements. The biggest rumor out there is an announcement of some Mass Effect related content coming out of the awards. This has been fueled by Bioware with their release of some unexplained images which are clearly Mass Effect related.

Whether this is an expansion to Mass Effect 2 or the long awaited details of Mass Effect 3 is anyone's guess, and, believe us, people are guessing. so if they wanted to create buzz, Bioware succeeded. hey, we're talking about it, aren't we?

As always, stay tuned.

Good luck and good gaming

New Lara Croft Tomb Raiider Announced

The next Lara Croft Tomb Raider was just announced and this time we're presented with a younger (21), edgier and (from the pictures) hotter Lara. This is being billed as an origin story, so we can expect to learn more about Lara and how she became the person she did.

Somehow, our Lara gets stranded on an island which turns out to be far from deserted, and must fight for survival. "After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive."

This game also promises to have more open areas to explore, a more open ended feel for us RPG fans and a better, revamped shooting system, ditching auto aim for free aim combat. Since the theme of this game is survival, the focus is on scavenging for food, water, weapons and equipment, and on crafting equipment and weapons from found items. And since Lara is just starting out, there will be some serious training involved to get her to be all she can be.

The release is a ways away, though, so we'll have to wait for this.

Good Luck and good gaming.
