Hello, I'm Tim Lynch, and I'm reaching out to you with a story of resilience and hope. Unfortunately, on September 3, 2023 I fell victim to an elder scam when someone got hold of my debit card and stole $19,000 from me, gambling away my money at a local casino, a significant blow, especially given my health challenges. I believe this date was specifically chosen because it was the Sunday of a long weekend and the crooks figured they would not be discovered until Tuesday by which time all my money would be gone. Luckily I checked my bank account on line, noticed the massive withdrawals and canceled my debit card.

You see, I have a heart condition that makes even simple tasks like walking a real challenge, and I battle extreme leg swelling (edema) daily. Before this incident, I relied on my debit card to have groceries and essentials delivered to my doorstep. I do not have a credit card and am totally dependent on the debit card and my money in the bank. Now someone was stealing it before my very eyes. I was overwhelmed. My heart was racing. What was I to do.

But here's where your kindness and support come into play. I had to cancel my debit card in a panic to stop further unauthorized withdrawals and spending, which means I can't even afford to put food on the table right now. I have been subsisting on #PopTarts since the incident. I wonder if they had the steak and lobster at the casino on me. It's a tough situation to be in, and it's disheartening to think someone could commit such a heartless act. I am not sure if they is evil or just extremely selfish and egotistical.

The Proof May NOT Be Out There In The Updated Big Foot Film

The History Channel's latest 'The Proof is Out There' episode investigated the story of Bigfoot. More specifically the famous or infamous Bob Gimlin and Roger Patterson video from 1967 that claimed to have captured the creature in northern California. The program "enhanced" the video using AI and came up with details it said made the film more compelling and possibly "real".

 The problem with this is the very use of AI to "enhance" the images may have actually altered the film to make it more believable. AI does not enhance a video or image as most people think. Instead, it adds or subtracts details depending on its training. So the detail of the muscle definition offered as evidence of genuineness may in fact be proof of the video's falseness. If the AI was trained on naked humans walking it would add the definition of musculature as a result. Likewise the "butt crack". As to the way the foot moved, if the AI was trained on apes and gorillas walking it would have interpreted that and added it to the details of its "enhancement".

The "evidence" that the fur moved naturally could also be the AI's interpretation of the way fur is supposed to move based on its training. Again AI does not bring out detail it adds it, subtracts it  or interprets it based on its algorithm and training.

The most compelling evidence of the untrustworthiness of this process is the inability of the AI to fill in details of the face. While this was blamed on graininess, it was more likely that the AI was never trained on people walking in a gorilla suit wearing a mask. If it was trained on hominid faces it could have tried and failed to interpret the face as belonging to one of them and removing detail to make it fit.

Just like in Oz we are drawn to the display of power in AI while paying no attention to the machine behind the curtain. The truth is we are no further along in proving whether the video is real or fake than we were before. But now we have a better version made by AI like it does with Deep Fakes.

Planning For the Future When The Future Is Uncertain: A Response to the Coronavirus Crisis

I wanted to address this given what is going on in the world with coronavirus and such. Folks on the news are fond of saying that we live in uncertain times. We have never faced a crisis like this and are dealing with social distancing, work from home, business closings, event postponements and cancellations and no sports. Our grand plans have been disrupted, put on hold or gone up in smoke and folks are left saying Now what? How do we plan for the future when our vision of the future has been taken from us.
 
The problem as I see it is that certainty of the future is an illusion. In fact it always has been. Most people don't act like it is especially tech folks. They tend to think that everything is predictable and you can actually plan for the future. So they live in this nonexistent future and get thrown for a loop when something unexpected happens. The key to planning for the future when the future is uncertain is to not plan for it. If you live in the here and now and be present then the future will take care of itself and when unexpected things happen you will just deal with them instead of wasting time freaking out because they were unexpected. So my advice is just live in the now and be zen just like that Jedi you admire.

Coronavirus and the New Normal
